Team Building In The Workplace!}

Team Building in the Workplace

Team building in the workplace is not something that every company considers a high priority. Though high productivity and customer/client satisfaction are always on the minds of executives and managers, the approaches traditionally taken to achieve these ends often ignore the company’s most valuable asset: their workforce.

As the business world becomes ever more competitive, businesses in every economic sector are becoming aware of the need to take advantage of every opportunity to outcompete their rivals and this has come to include team building. By encouraging and even actively promoting team building in the workplace, companies are able to foster more open communication between their staff, build strong work relationships and build morale, with the end result being happier, more productive workers and a healthier corporate culture overall. When employees are respected by their employer and their value to the organization acknowledged, they are far more willing to take the extra steps necessary to achieve beyond the expectations of the company.

How Do You Begin?

There are two important elements to successfully building teams in the workplace: commitment and consistency. Team building isn’t something which can be done with a single activity or corporate retreat – it’s a process, not a destination in itself and as such, team building in the workplace demands a comprehensive strategy aimed at not only developing, but maintaining a team-oriented work environment.

Begin by asking yourself a few questions:

Purpose: Is every member of your team clearly aware their role and of what is expected of them? Does the team share an identifiable purpose or goal to work towards? Do their job descriptions spell out these goals and expectations?

YouTube Preview Image

The Big Picture: Does your team know how they integrate into the organization as a whole? Do team members have an understanding of not only their goals as a team, but of the wider goals of the entire company?

Resources: Are there resources which are available to your team right now -and are team members aware of them and how to put them to use? Is your team missing resources which could help them to more efficiently achieve their goals?

Communication: What kind of communication capabilities exist between team members; the team and management and the team and the company itself? Are there open and transparent channels of communication available to the team? Are your team members a part of decision making processes?

Morale: Do the members of your team enjoy their work? What strategies do they use to cope with obstacles to their goals; and how do they deal with failure?

Tips for effective team building in the workplace

Identify common ground: Encourage discussion to find goals which are common to the members of your team. Identify and emphasize common interests, ideas which members share and so on.

What you’re doing here is building common ground as a foundation for the team to come together and put their strengths to work to achieve their common goals. This serves to unify the team and identify skills and talents which could be used to improve company operations.

Value each member of the team: Along with building a rapport with your team, you need to do the same with each member individually. Obviously, you’ll have a different kind of relationship with each member and you’ll need to listen to and talk to each member on their own merits. When you talk to the entire team, you’re speaking to the things they share; but when you speak to team members one on one, you are speaking to what makes them individuals – and acknowledging their individuality, which can lead to great things in the workplace.

Lay the groundwork for small victories first: Build your team’s sense of self-worth by helping them to make some small victories; the more confident they feel in themselves and in the team, the better their morale and productivity – and the more motivated they’ll be to go after bigger goals in the future.

Foster creativity: You should always be open to ideas from your team; have an open door policy for your team, establish idea boxes and above all, encourage them to think outside of the box and come up with creative solutions. Once you show them that you value their ideas and encourage them to think creatively, amazing things can happen.

Build a sense of ownership in the organization: Involve your team in the decision making process, delegate authority to them and give them the encouragement and confidence they need to succeed. This is the real goal of team building in the workplace: creating new leaders in the company and developing teams which can manage themselves.

Quick Tips for Team Building in the Workplace:

1. Always encourage your team!

2. Make keeping their morale and energy up a daily goal!

3. Be there for them when they need you!

4. Communicate openly and honestly with your team, always!

Northern Alabama is home to four unique National Wildlife Refuges: Wheeler, Sauta Cave, Fern Cave, and Key Cave. The refuges conserve Alabamas natural resources and protect critical habitat for wildlife. Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge is the largest of the group. The other three are administered as satellites of Wheeler.

Wheeler Refuge encompasses 35,000 acres of land along the Tennessee River between Huntsville and Decatur, Alabama. The Visitor Center is located off Highway 67 southeast of Decatur. Wheeler Refuge contains forest and wetlands that provide feeding and nesting sites for a variety of birds. Wheeler is considered to be the easternmost refuge in the Mississippi flyway. The refuge provides winter habitat for migratory birds, particularly Canada geese. It is also home to the states largest population of ducks. Winter visitors may also see populations of sandhill cranes and sometimes whooping cranes. The Visitor Center contains interpretive wildlife displays, and a glass enclosed wildlife viewing building provides an excellent place for waterfowl viewing. A .5 mile nature trail with a boardwalk takes visitors through a section of cypress swamp. There is also a picnic area at the facility. The Visitor Center is open daily from October-February from 9am-5pm. From March-September the Visitor Center is open Tuesday-Saturday from 9am-4pm.

Key Cave National Wildlife Refuge is located five miles southwest of Florence in northwest Alabama. The cave provides critical habitat for the only known population of the endangered Alabama cavefish, one of the rarest freshwater fish. Key Cave is also a maternity cave for endangered gray bats. Located on the northern shore of Pickwick Lake, Key Cave Refuge consists hardwood forest, grassland, and croplands. Although the refuge is open to the public, Key Cave is not open due to the potential disturbance of the endangered species. Activities that may be done at the refuge include hiking, hunting, and wildlife observation.

Sauta Cave National Wildlife Refuge (formerly known as Blowing Wind Cave) is located seven miles west of Scottsboro on Highway 72. It is located above Sauty Creek on Guntersville Lake. The refuge protects both gray and Indiana bats and their habitat. In winter the bats hibernate in the cave and in summer the cave is the breeding site for 200,000-300,000 gray bats. The cave itself is closed to the public, but from June through August bats may be viewed emerging from the cave entrance at dusk. The best viewing point is located 100 yards inside the park entrance. Other popular activities at the refuge include hiking, photography, and wildlife observation.

Fern Cave National Wildlife Refuge is located on County Road 500, off Highway 72 near Paint Rock, Alabama. Access to the refuge is difficult and requires hiking in along the Paint Rock River. The cave, which is closed to the public, houses the largest winter colony of gray bats in the US, as well as a large colony of Indiana bats. The terrain is rugged, and viewings here are difficult. The refuge is open year round during daylight hours.

A visit to any of these refuges in northern Alabama provides an excellent opportunity to observe wildlife. Wheeler Refuge by far has the easiest access and the best facilities. However, a visit to any of the others at dusk provides the unique opportunity for visitors to watch hundreds of bats emerging from their caves to feed.

How To Take Care Of Your Wrought Iron Gate?}

How to take care of your wrought iron gate?

by

Andrew Cooper

If you have a desire to count on a gate for your house that lasts for a century or more then wrought iron gates are the ones you need to look for. The use of wrought iron gates and fencing is fast-becoming an artistic trend in many homes. Though they are expensive, they are worthy. As we know well, wrought iron doesn’t need as much attention as wood. However, it should still be checked periodically for any signs of wear or corrosion. Maintaining a wrought iron gate is simple, if done in a proper and effective way. Here are a few guidelines on how to clean your wrought iron gate.

You can simply do it yourself with the help of a garden hose, mild detergent, bucket, sand paper, primer, and few other common necessities for a cleaning purpose. Initially you need to take a bucket containing warm water and mild detergent. Mix with your hands until you get enough soap bubbles. Now you would have to dip a sponge into the bucket and rub it on the gates. With the help of a brush, scrub the whole area of the gate. Rub thoroughly on the area where there are more dirt, grime and bird droppings. Once you finish scrubbing, use your garden hose to rinse both the sides of your gate thoroughly. Rinse well, thereby not leaving soap residues behind. This might lead to the discoloration of the gate. Now wipe the entire portion of the gate with a towel, and leave it to dry for several minutes.

Next comes the rust cleaning process. It is easy to remove rust from the gate at its initial stage. In case if it is left unattended, it develops more extensively and is very hard to remove. You can remove it by using a piece of sandpaper and rubbing away thoroughly on the areas which it has affected. After rubbing on both the sides of the gate, wash it again and let it dry. Wait about 30 minutes for the gates to air dry. On applying a primer onto the gates you can find a best solution to prevent the formation of rust. Choosing a primer that has a spray mechanism would be a better option. It is best to apply 2 coats of primer for higher protection. And finally comes the most important step and that is the painting of your gate. You would have to paint your gates with paint that is suitable for wrought iron. This offers further protection of your gates.
